THE Vice President, Ms Samia Suluhu Hassan, today led hundreds of Dar es Salaam residents in a charity walk to raise 500m/- for the training of 400 midwives to enhance their efficiency in service delivery.
Addressing the residents who turned up at Green Ground, Oysterbay for
the charity walk, Ms Samia assured the citizens of the government
commitment in addressing various challenges in the health sector.
She insisted that the government will continue to monitor the performance of health personnel and increase the number of beds in maternity wards and provision of free health services to special groups.
The VP also called upon the private sector to continue collaborating with the government in the provision of health services in order to attain its objective of reducing maternal and child mortality rates.
Ms Samia, however, commended the African Medical and Research Foundation (AMREF) for supporting local communities through various projects, including sponsoring education for children from poor families particularly on midwifery certificate.
On her part, the Minister for Community Development, Gender, Elders and Children, Ms Ummy Mwalimu, said that the government is determined to reduce the number of maternal and child mortality by allocating enough budget for the health sector.
A total of 290m/- was collected during the fundraising from various development stakeholders out of the estimated 500m/- target.
