THE President of the International
Criminal Court (ICC), Judge Silvia Fernández de Gurmendi, on Friday met
and held talks with Tanzania’s Permanent Representative in the United
Nations (UN), Ambassador Tuvako Manongi on the court’s operations, among
other areas.
During the talks, Judge Gurmendi
commended the Ambassador for his speech at the United Nations General
Assembly when the report on ICC was tabled.
According to the ICC president, the
speech was well balanced and had cited recommendations of improving
partnership between its members as per the Rome Agreement.
“I had followed through every point of your speech and took notes of all the points.
The speech delivered by Tanzania was
outstanding and well balanced, I therefore applaud you for that,” noted
Judge Gurmendi. She admitted that it was high time for stakeholders of
the two sides to sit and discuss as per the recommendations by Tanzania
and others, particularly on what had been termed as misinterpretation on
some articles of the Rome Agreement which established the ICC.
On his part, Ambassador Manongi pointed
out that the recommendations which were provided by Tanzania in
collaboration with other countries do not aim to amend the Rome
Agreement or trim down the courts powers.
“Our recommendations should not be
misinterpreted, that our intentions are to trickle down the court’s
powers, for we all believe that it should continue to exist.
We are still convinced that both
parties’ views and points are credible, therefore what is needed is
thorough discussions,” said Ambassador Manongi.
