THE Ministry of Education, Science,
Technology and Vocational Training has given a green light to teachers
currently pursuing a diploma in teaching course under the National
Technical Award (NTA) to complete their studies.
The ministry made a u-turn yesterday
following confusion that emerged among the education stakeholders after
publication of the new circular of 2016 about the teacher education in
the country.
Part Five of the circular, which was
published last week, states that the programme, under which teachers
pursue diploma courses while on the job under the NTA, is from now
suspended until improvements on such system, which started during the
2014/15 academic year, are made.
Acting Commissioner of Education, Mr
Nicolas Buretta, yesterday clarified that initially under the curriculum
by the Tanzania Institute Education (TIE), there was no training
programme for upgrading those teachers from certificate to diploma for
primary education.
This system only started last year when
the government wanted to harmonise the teacher education programmes to
meet the needs of the 2014 education policy.
However, through a circular issued last
week, the government said it has established several challenges in
implementing the policy with regards to the teacher education,
therefore, it decided to go back to the previous system to pave a way
for more improved way of implementing the policy.
