Preps for gas-fired firm over tax liabilities power link to Coast Region reach 87 pc

THE Tanzania Electric Supply Company Limited (TANESCO) has said it has reached 87 per cent of preparations to connect 132KV of gas-fired power to envisaged new industries in Coast Region.
A fortnight ago, Industry, Trade and Investment Minister Charles Mwijage signed the economic and technical agreement with China that would see construction of multi-billion iron and roof clay tiles industries this year in the region.

The iron factory, to have a production capacity of 1.2 million tonnes, is set for construction in Mlandizi – to produce over two times Tanzania’s demand of only 500,000 tonnes annually, putting the country in a better position to export the surplus.

It is expected that the facility would manufacture 80,000 square metres of the roof clay tiles daily.

Speaking to the ‘Daily News’ yesterday, TANESCO Managing Director Felchesmi Mramba told the ‘Daily News’ yesterday that they were confident that all the emerging industries were connected to sufficient and reliable power as the country was moving to industrialisation by 2025.

He said the state-owned power firm was currently implementing a major project of constructing two new gas-fired power plants at Kinyerezi II, which would be enough to serve the industries.

The government has recently launched construction works of the Kinyerezi II power plant project, to be completed in 2018, and which will be supplied with natural gas from the Mnazi Bay.

Kinyerezi II construction works follow Kinyerezi I power plant inaugurated in 2015, which has th capacity of 150 MW and is part of a project compounded by four gas fired power plants meant to add over 1,000 MW of capacity to the national grid through a 400 KV sub-station in Kinyerezi area.
