FORMER lawmaker and minister Joseph
Mungai, who died on Tuesday in Dar es Salaam at around 4:00 pm after a
short illness, will be laid to rest in his home village in Iringa’s
Mufindi District on Saturday.
Mungai’s son, who was only identified as
Mr William, told reporters in Dar es Salaam yesterday that prior to
being transported to his graveyard, residents of Dar es Salaam and
government officials in the city will pay their last respects at
Karimjee grounds today.
“He was a Mafinga Member of Parliament
(MP) for 35 years and this is the reason why we agreed that he should be
laid to rest in Mafinga - our home,” said William. Meanwhile, President
John Magufuli has sent a condolence message to Iringa Regional
Commissioner (RC), Ms Amina Masenza, following the death of the former
minister and lawmaker.
“I have been saddened by the death and I
urge Ms Masenza to convey my message of condolence to the family of the
bereaved, Mufindi residents and the National Assembly MPs,” said the
president.
While expressing his deepest sympathy
following the sad news, he described the senior politician as a
hardworking-man, who stood for what he believed in and a development
fighter.
“I worked with Mungai when he was the
Minister for Education and Vocational Training and I was the
Minister-in-charge of Works. We worked together and we advised each
other on various issues of national interest. He generally believed in
teamwork,” the president said
