CCM has, as expected, effected
significant changes to its secretariat and charted the way forward in
recommendations presented to the party’s National Executive Committee
(NEC) meeting yesterday.
In one of the changes announced by the
ruling party’s National Chairman, President John Magufuli, the number
appointments’ slots by the chairman to the NEC has been reduced from 10
to 7.
Changes in the CCM-NEC’s line-up were
inevitable following the events that have taken place in the country due
to last October’s general elections in which the party garnered the
majority of votes to win the presidential election.
Yet, memories of that election remain
vivid to this day, judging from the political drama that characterised
the process to the end, in which CCM itself tasted the rough waters. It
needs not belabouring the fact that it had been one of the eventful
years in the ruling outfit in recent years.
Given its strong foundations, built over
the years since it was founded in 1977 following the merger between
TANU on the Mainland and Afro-Shirazi Party (ASP) in the Isles, the
party emerged stronger and united than ever before.
Addressing the committee’s meeting in
Dar es Salaam yesterday, Chairman Magufuli rightly acknowledged the need
to rebuild the party, asking members to forget about the past and look
to the future instead with a new sense of purpose and solidarity.
Further note is being taken to the
national chairman’s observation to the fact that the party was among the
institutions mentioned in the corruption indexes and his avowed action
against all those party functionaries who will be found to be engaged in
the vice.
We take further note of the
reconciliatory note displayed by Dr Magufuli when he said that CCM
members should let bygones be bygones and instead unite and work
together to consolidate the party. CCM is going through a new era of
youth dynamism, science and technology experienced throughout the world.
The new appointees to its secretariat
exude youth and change in accordance with modern time national and
international dictates. Most important of all are Tanzanians themselves.
They need dynamic leadership, fresh ideas and accelerated development.
It is the ruling party and has been so
since independence in 1961 for Tanganyika and the revolution in 1964 in
Zanzibar. It runs the Union and Zanzibar governments. The stronger CCM
is the better for Tanzania.
