Queen of Katwe actress Lupita Nyong’o is rallying support on a petition calling for increase of salaries on New York City’s Broadway theatre.
“More often than not, the most
exciting, modern diverse and original stories come off the Broadway
theatre. It is those artists that have fed my creative soul and it is
there that I go again and again to get inspired.
“These are artists who give their
time, heart and soul to the craft but unfortunately the wage is anaemic
and quite frankly unsustainable as a living wage in New York City,” she said in an Instagram video.
“It is so vital that the New York
theatre community can provide actors with a sustainable living wage so
that they can continue to share their passion and hold a mirror to
humanity. Let us value their gift. So, on behalf of the New York Theatre
community, I support a fair wage on stage,” she concluded.
Without cowing, the Hollywood actress
has been very vocal on issues affecting theatre and performing arts in
general. Given her prestigious status, her voice and that of others with
the same prominence, is likely to stir something good.
