Gvt spends over 10bn/- to renovate teachers’ training colleges

THE government has spent a total of 10.2bn/- to renovate ten out of 35 Public Teachers’ Training Colleges in the Country, it was confirmed here

Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology Ms Maimuna Tarishi made the revelation here when she paid a visit at Mpwapwa Teachers College to inspect the undergoing renovation.

She said the government planned to renovate 20 teachers training colleges in 2016/2017 financial year to improve learning environment especially for teachers pursuing special programmes in the country. The renovated colleges are among the 20 to be renovated in this financial year.
“The ten colleges under renovation in the first phase includes; Mpwapwa, Songea, Morogoro, Butimba, Marangu, Klerruu, Tukuyu, Kasulu, Tabora and Korogwe,” she said. The PS said that the colleges also accommodated some 8,000 students pursuing special science, ICT and mathematics programs.
The students had been transferred from Dodoma and Dar es Salaam universities. “The aim of renovating the colleges is to ensure better learning and training environment for teachers in the country specially those for science and ICT programmes “ she said.
The plans also aimed to ensure the government acquires ICT and science professionals towards the construction of industries in the country. Meanwhile, Ms Tarish said the deadline for admitting students transferred from UDOM and Dar es Salaam University (UDSM) was November 9, this year.
She directed the management of the colleges not to receive or admit any students, who would report beyond the scheduled time (November 9 this year). At Mpwapwa College, the PS learned that 60 students out of 1,000 students selected to study in the college had not yet reported by November 9.
A total of 1bn/- was spent to renovate various buildings and other facilities at the college.
