IN an election result that took the world and perhaps the United States itself by surprise, billionaire businessman, TV personality and politician Donald John Trump, standing as candidate for the Republican Party, defied all odds and set himself on course to being sworn-in as the 45th American President.
Come January 20, 2017, Mr Trump (70) will take oath of office as the
new American leader, after which the whole world will be watching to see
how his presidency will turn out to be.
With 270 electoral college votes required to win the presidential election, the seemingly independent politician had garnered 276 against the 218 collected by his opponent from the Democratic Party -- former Secretary of State and First Lady Hillary Clinton.
By any standard, it was a resounding and convincing victory. Trump went into this election a ‘loser’ in most opinion polls, including closing ones, with most predictions giving Mrs Clinton victory on a silver platter!
President John Magufuli was among the first world leaders to send messages of congratulations to President-Elect Trump on his election to lead the world’s most powerful nation. In a tweet, the president hailed Mr Trump’s victory, assuring him of continued friendship and cooperation.
American presidential politics watchers, scholars and political analysts must have been relieved by Mr Trump’s victory speech, which was a sharp departure from his early campaign rhetoric that must have caused ripples of apprehension across the US itself and the world.
His victory speech made America and the world sigh with much relief as he promised to turn around his country’s fortunes, including rehabilitating the infrastructure and healing the wounds and divisions caused by this election, seen as one of the most close and acrimonious in recent US history.
The president-elect was quick - and correct – to change his tone, trumping reconciliation in a nation so much divided after almost a year of campaigning – from the primaries to Election Day.
He looked accommodating to all – winners and losers alike, promising a ‘One America’ now that the elections are over.
Tanzania and the world wish Mr Trump well at the Oval Office of the White Office, expecting to work closely with the United States in a true win-win situation aimed at making the world a better place to live in and expediting the development of developing nations. In this, we wish Mr Trump all the best.
